Stevenston's new ice rink gets official seal of approval at opening

Stevenston’s newest sports facility, the new £3.9m state-of-the-art ice rink where local stars will hone their skills and develop their talents has been officially opened.

Shona Robison, the Minister for Commonwealth Games and Sport cut the ribbon at Auchenharvie Leisure Centre alongside some of North Ayrshire most promising figure skaters, curlers, ice hockey players and speed skaters.

Ms Robison was joined by the Provost of North Ayrshire, Councillor Pat McPhee, the Chair of sportscotland Louise Martin CBE and representatives from the local ice clubs for the opening of the new facility - one of the largest in the west of Scotland.

North Ayrshire Council embarked on a major £3.9m overhaul of the ice rink at Auchenharvie Leisure Centre, Stevenston in April 2010 with £300,000 of the total funding coming from sportscotland.

The new facility replaces the former ‘fun rink’ at Auchenharvie – a kidney-shaped multi level rink which offered little flexibility for sports clubs – and the smaller facility at the Magnum Leisure Centre in Irvine.

Just a few metres short of an Olympic sized rink, the new 56m x 30m facility is complimented by 360 degree protective glazing, two team dugouts, a designated spectator seating area, four flexible team changing areas.

With the Commonwealth Games, Winter Olympics and other major sporting events on the horizon, it is hoped that the purpose-built rink will not only be a draw for social skaters but will also give talented youngsters the high quality facilities they need to be on top of their game.

Minister for Commonwealth Games and Sport, Shona Robison said: “The Scottish Government is committed to improving sports facilities across Scotland and through sportscotland have invested £300,000 in this facility. I am delighted to be here to officially open the ice rink and see the end product of that funding first hand.

As part of the official opening event, invited guests were treated to a demonstration on the ice from a variety of local groups who were instrumental in the design of the new facility.

Provost of North Ayrshire, Councillor Pat McPhee, said: “The fantastic new facility at Auchenharvie Leisure Centre replaces a 22-year-old rink which, although popular with social skaters, offered very little opportunity for local clubs to train and develop.

“The Commonwealth Games and other major sporting events are fast approaching and here at North Ayrshire Council, we are working with our partners to create a legacy from this and other major event where everybody is active, involved and inspired.

sportscotland Chair, Louise Martin CBE added: “By expanding the size of the rink, Auchenharvie is now able to host local and regional level ice hockey, ice dance, figure skating and speed skating competitions; as well as allowing club membership to increase. The curling community have also benefited from the inclusion of an additional lane, which will help to support the development of local clubs.”

Robert MacMillan says

Maybe now the management at Auchenharvie will spend some of the gym membership money on the gym itself rather than on anything but the gym.

It is now officially 'state of the dump'; a third world facility that would not get anyone across the door in the back streets of Mumbai but which charges members New York prices for the privilege of having access to decrepit equipment that should have been scrapped years ago.

The average member pays more than £25 each month to get treated with utter contempt by NAC. Bikes with bent pedals, rowing machines with handles so worn that they can hardly be gripped and with displays that don't function, running machines with slipping belts that sound as if they will disintegrate at any moment and other equipment that quite possibly will be responsible for serious injury if the
 mismanagement is allowed to continue.

When one takes into account the stained carpets, inadequate lighting and the general rundown appearance and ambience of a facility that has probably had <1% of gym membership fees spent on it in the last five years it speaks volumes of NACs financial stewardship.

The five a side football facility at Auchenharvie was heavily over-subscribed and yet it was allowed to deteriorate to the point of no return. Not a penny was spent on the maintenance of it until now the only place you will see the playing surface is scattered around parts of the local golf courses. Auchenharvie driving range is going the same way, utterly dilapidated and soon it will have to be closed on H&S issues..

It is a tragedy that facilities that could have been kept in excellent condition and which would have continued to be used by local people with a minimum of expenditure were allowed to deteriorate to the point that they did so without anyone in officialdom intervening.

Whilst the ice rink is to be welcomed it should not have been at the expense of every other facility within Auchenharvie complex and beyond. The first rule of thumb should be are there enough people participating in a particular sport to warrant the expenditure? I guarantee that gym membership proceeds do pass that test as would 'five a side football' participants etc. Of course minority activities should be catered for but the practice of sucking all of the money out of facilities that have good memberships who pay their money in the expectation that the standards will be maintained and injecting all of that cash into areas of low membership simply to satisfy the desires of a vocal few should stop.

However, it also raises questions about who on earth decided years ago that daft kidney shaped ice rinks would be better than a traditional rink. I guess that speaks more about the then councils attitude to sport and competition in general and perhaps that contempt has now shifted to those people stupid enough to want to remain fit and healthy by going to their local gym or for the hundreds of young people who want to play football.
