History of ICI factory by local author launched

'Shadow of the Dynamite', a book telling the story of the ICI explosives factory near Stevenston, writtn by local author John Millar has been launched.

The book was officially launched at the Vennel Local and Family History centre in Glasgow, and is packed with stories and anecdotes from former workers at the factory, which employed up to 14,000 people at its height.

I believe John Millar was once a classmate of mine in Stevenston. Can anyone tell me how I go about getting a copy of this book delivered to Canada?

Hi Glynis,Helen Norwood here! I very recently organised a Stevenston High school reunion of "the Sixties" Obviously you were one of those that I didn't manage to trace!

My e-mail address is   hllhalb@aol.com so if you'd like to get in touch I will hopefully be able to send you some pics from the event.

John Miller was there as well as many others you will remember.

The book you refer to was written by his dad and is well worth a read. If you send me your address I'll gladly forward a copy to you.

Regards Helen

I tried contacting you at hllhalb@aol.com but it bounced back.  Do you have another address I can use?

Ron Fitzsimons says

Hello, I started my first full time job in I.C.I. back in 1946, I worked in what was called the Canister shop, just across the way from the box factory, we cut and soldered tin and zinc linings for the wooden boxes.

The foreman was an Englishman named Harold and Harry also an Englishman was the charge hand, I was working in there until my call up in 1950, I was in the Artillery as a radio operator and was sent to the canal zone in Egypt for the rest of my 2 years, we went over to Holland and through Europe to Italy and sailed from Treste to Port Siad.

Got a job back in I.C.I until 1953 when I emigrated to Canada, been here ever since, Cheers, Ron Fitzsimons.
