Former Auchenharvie Academy deputy appointed place on Scottish teaching body
Former deputy head teacher at Auchenharvie Academy, Councillor Willie Gibson, has been appointed to the regulatory body for teaching standards.
The local councillor for Saltcoats and Stevenston, who has 34 years working in schools behind him, is one of only two local government representatives to be appointed to the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTC Scotland).
Councillor Gibson, along with GTC Scotland’s other 36 members will be responsible for maintaining a high standard of teaching and helping to improve the quality of learning across the country.
The GTC Scotland keeps a register of teachers and is responsible for setting their standards of professional conduct and competence.
Members, who serve on the GTC Scotland for two to four years, also investigate individuals' fitness to teach.
Councillor Gibson said:"GTC Scotland Council members come from a variety of backgrounds.
"Having worked as a teacher for more than 30 years and more recently as an elected member in North Ayrshire, I hope to be able to contribute to improving the quality of teaching and learning both here and elsewhere in Scotland."
