Stevenston is part of North Ayrshire's Three Towns conurbation, along with Ardrossan and Saltcoats. Stevenston dates back as far as the 13th century, with evidence of settlement since prehistoric times. A coal mining town until the pits were exhausted at the end of the 19th century, in the 20th century Stevenston was developed for industry by major firms such as Nobel Industries and ICI. In 1840 Stevenston railway station opened, on the line travelling from Ardrossan to Glasgow and still serves the town today.
